Description:
The issue begins with a Hawkman tale written, drawn and colored by
Kubert (who started drawing Hawkman over 60 years ago). And what a story it is!
Kubert uses it as a spring-board for not only an action-packed tale of Hawkman
and Shayera's first voyage to Earth, but also for making a profound statement
about humanity.
Next is Brian Buniak's Angel
and the Ape, an absurdly comic tale about private detectives Angel O'Day and Sam
Simeon. This story takes all the classic elements of a classic hard-boiled film
noir and turns it on its head ... and then kicks it.
Reminiscent of Kubert's
starkly penciled black-and-white art and the overall tone of his graphic novels Dong Xoai, Vietnam 1965 and Yossel, the
anthology continues with Kubert's next story, "Spit." It follows the hard-knock
life of its titular character, an unloved and lonely orphan, who finds his way
onto a ship as a cabin boy.
Finally, Sam Glanzman's
triumphant return to the comic medium with "U.S.S. Stevens, I Remember." A
heart-wrenching and true remembrance of Glanzmen's time served in WWII, this
story is a harrowing look at the atrocities and inhumanity of war.
